Up one level

The basic functionality is required for any laptop running OreTek.

The following laptops have been tested and meet the above criteria: As new laptops are tested, instructions for the installation of OreTek or OreTek/RadScan will be provided.

Toshiba Satellite 1805-S204

Toshiba Satellite 1805-S207

I purchased this laptop exclusively for use with OreTek, but it originally came with Windows XP. OreTek obviously is not compatible with it, but I had to see it startup at least once. Windows XP did not start up correctly. Gee that gives me goose bumps. Oh well, so on with the installation.

Redhat 7.2 does not allow for this installation, but there is no problem upgrading from 7.1. The following relates to how to install onto Redhat 7.1
This laptop was extremely frustrating until I used the XFree86-fbdev driver suggested by another site. On initial power up, the screen is not stretched. When installing, select 1024*768*16bpp mode, and Generic fbdev for the device. When tested, it will display an 800*600 test result. Proceed, ignoring the oddity.

Although it's not fully tested, all appears ok. I've yet to test the parallel port, but the NIC works fine by default in Redhat 7.1. Configured to use Generic fbdev on install, and after bootup, added the following to the kernel, and all seemed ok:

/etc/lilo.conf

Vga=791

from a terminal, type "lilo" to update the kernel configuration
After rebooting the system, it should now be safe to operate in runlevel 5

Special note:
Recently,I installed the Rawhide flavor of Xconfigurator and XFree and configured it using CyberbladeXP with no problems.

Compaq Presario 2500

This unit also came with XP, which never got the chance to boot up. Stupid Microsoft OEM tax. For the most part, the installation goes well, except that the following may required in lilo.conf, if using the default hard drive

append="hdc=ide-scsi ide=nodma"
Video is significantly slower than on the Toshiba, but otherwise this unit is compatible with Oretek, and is the test unit for RadScan, a new product from OsiruSoft. Important to note is that this unit does not support 15 bpp graphics, only 16 bpp. I'm now using an 80GB Toshiba drive on the system, which eliminates the nodma kernel parameter.

Acer Aspire 3680

After installing lilo and compiling and installing kernel 2.6.24.4 and making necessary changes to the security key software for kernel 2.6.19+, both RadScan and OreTek worked flawlessly. A pcmcia parallel port is required, but only for the prototype versions of RadScan.
